SPANISH ARTIST MIGUEL SOLER-ROIG IN THE FIRST NFT EXHIBITION AT LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA
The exhibition "The Time of Chimeras" was on display from April 23rd to November 27th, at Palazzo Ca' Bernardo in Venice.
Miguel Soler-Roig participated, along with 20 other international artists, in the first exhibition of Crypto Art within the official program of the Biennale Arte 2022. The curators Sandro Orlandi Stagl and Paul Emmanuel Loga Mahop defined the theme "The time of chimeras" by focusing on imagination as a key aspect of artistic creation. The project was conceived in resonance with the general theme of La Biennale di Venezia directed by Cecilia Alemani, "The Milk of Dreams", inspired by the work of Eleonora Carrington, based on themes such as the metamorphosis of bodies or the relationship between individuals and technologies. Precisely around these discursive axes revolved the works of Spanish artist Miguel Soler-Roig, who developed mutant pieces in which bodies, mediated by technology and nature, are the protagonists.
The exhibition was part of Cameroon's proposal, divided into two pavilions to boost the country's visibility in its first participation in La Biennale di Venezia. The country dedicated one pavilion to mostly Cameroonian artists, and a second pavilion located in the Palazzo Ca' Bernardo to an innovative bet on NFTs. The idea of juxtaposing works by international and Cameroonian artists came from the desire to foster dialogue in light of the African country's complex history. The exhibition offered a great opportunity to meet experts in digital art and cultivate relationships with the most prominent platforms in the sector.
The Warp of the Chimeras
A chimera is a dream, an unattainable proposal that comes from the imagination. However, sometimes dreams do come true, which is why we never stop pursuing chimeras. Science, technology and art are some of the most valuable tools to ease our way towards illusions that change continuously: they warp with time and knowledge. Miguel Soler-Roig address the different meanings of the term, traveling from the global to the particular, through a key element in which all perspectives converge: imagination. Imagination is the great weaver of myths, of those ancestral stories -based on traditions and legends- that explain the universe, the origin of the world, natural anomalies and other phenomena. In a way, myths are an altered and pseudo oneiric version of reality. In dreams, everything is possible: people acquire superhuman powers, the natural becomes supernatural, the weak becomes powerful...
The artist is interested in investigating the origin of myths, what really happened, how they are transformed and the information that reaches us in later times.The classical authors could have transferred their dreams to the story or transfigured them under the effects of a psychotropic, that directly results in a mythification.In order to show the distortion experienced by mythical events and characters, Soler-Roig resorts to the technique of photographic solarization, offering us changing versions -in negative and positive- of empowered women who are linked to the four elements. In this sense, he draws on the theory of the philosopher Gaston Bachelard, who establishes a law that classifies the various material imaginations according to whether they are related to fire, air, water or earth. These constitute "the hormones of the imagination" by exerting a direct action on the artistic creation.
The artist travelled to Crete and photographed there in location, because of its culture -the Minoan- that essentially contributed to the ancient Greek mythology, as well as the birthplace of Zeus, divinity considered as the father of all gods. The final result are four one-minute videos, which transform organically as the four elements affect four women: different effects, undulations and disappearances activate the atmospheres and the heroines themselves. The NFTs can be considered chimeras - the pinnacle of imagination deployed in all its difficulty - and the artist a sort of updated hero who surpasses Bellerophon, allowing these feminine creatures not only to continue living, but to transform, empower themselves, distort themselves to the changing rhythm of the four elements. To be goddesses, chimeras and food for our imagination.

ARTISTA ESPAÑOL EN LA PRIMERA EXPOSICIÓN NFT DE LA BIENNALE DI VENEZIA
La exposición "El Tiempo de las Quimeras" estuvo abierta del 23 de abril al 27 de noviembre, en el Palazzo Ca' Bernardo de Venecia.
Miguel Soler-Roig participó, junto con otros 20 artistas internacionales, en la primera exposición de Cripto Arte dentro del programa oficial de La Biennale di Venezia. Los comisarios Sandro Orlandi Stagl y Paul Emmanuel Loga Mahop han definido el tema «El tiempo de las Quimeras» poniendo el foco de atención en la imaginación como aspecto clave de la creación artística. El proyecto ha sido pensado en resonancia con la temática general de la Biennale Arte 2022 dirigida por Cecilia Alemani, «La leche de los sueños», inspirada en la obra de Eleonora Carrington, a partir de temáticas como la metamorfosis de los cuerpos o la relación entre los individuos y las tecnologías. Precisamente, en torno a estos ejes discursivos giran las obras del artista español Miguel Soler-Roig que ha desarrollado piezas mutantes en las que los cuerpos, mediatizados por la tecnología y la naturaleza, son los protagonistas.
Le exposición formó parte de la propuesta de Camerún, dividida en dos pabellones con el fin de impulsar la visibilidad de este país en su primera participación dentro de La Biennale di Venezia. El país dedicó un pabellón a artistas mayoritariamente cameruneses, y un segundo pabellón ubicado en el Palacio Ca' Bernardo a una innovadora apuesta por los NFTs. La idea de yuxtaponer obras de artistas internacionales y cameruneses, surgió del deseo de fomentar el diálogo a la luz de la compleja historia del país africano. La exposición ofreció una gran oportunidad para conocer a expertos en arte digital y cultivar relaciones con las plataformas más destacadas del sector.
“La Distorsión de las Quimeras”
Una quimera es un sueño, una propuesta inalcanzable que proviene de la imaginación. Sin embargo, a veces los sueños se hacen realidad, por eso no dejamos de perseguir quimeras. La ciencia, la tecnología y el arte son algunas de las herramientas más valiosas para facilitarnos el camino hacia unas ilusiones que cambian continuamente: se distorsionan con el tiempo y el conocimiento. Miguel Soler-Roig aborda los diferentes significados del término, viajando de lo global a lo particular, a través de un elemento clave en el que confluyen todas las perspectivas: la imaginación. La imaginación es la gran tejedora de mitos, de esas historias ancestrales -basadas en tradiciones y leyendas- que explican el universo, el origen del mundo, las anomalías naturales y otros fenómenos. En cierto modo, los mitos son una versión alterada y pseudo onírica de la realidad. En los sueños, todo es posible: las personas adquieren poderes sobrehumanos, lo natural se convierte en sobrenatural, lo débil se vuelve poderoso...
Al artista le interesa indagar el origen de los mitos, qué ocurrió realmente y la información que nos llega en épocas posteriores. Los autores clásicos pudieron haber trasladado sus sueños al relato o haberlos transformado bajo los efectos de un psicotrópico, lo que redunda directamente en una mitificación. Para evidenciar la distorsión que experimentan acontecimientos y personajes míticos, Soler-Roig recurre a la técnica de la solarización fotográfica, ofreciéndonos versiones cambiantes –en negativo y positivo– de mujeres empoderadas que se vinculan con los cuatro elementos. En este sentido, se inspira en la teoría del filósofo Gaston Bachelard, quien establece una ley que clasifica las diversas imaginaciones materiales según se relacionen con el fuego, el aire, el agua o a la tierra. Estas constituyen «las hormonas de la imaginación» al ejercer una acción directa sobre la creación artística.
El artista realizó el trabajo en Creta, por tratarse de una cultura –la minoica– que contribuyó esencialmente a la antigua mitología griega, así como lugar de nacimiento de Zeus, divinidad considerada como padre de todos los dioses. El resultado final son cuatro vídeos de un minuto, que se transforman orgánicamente según inciden los cuatro elementos (agua, tierra, viento y fuego) sobre cuatro heroínas: diferentes efectos, ondulaciones y desapariciones activan las atmósferas y los propios personajes. Los NFTs pueden considerarse quimeras –el culmen de la imaginación desplegada en toda su dificultad – y el artista una suerte de héroe actualizado que supera a Belerofonte, permitiendo a estas criaturas femeninas no solo continuar viviendo, sino transformarse, potenciarse, distorsionarse al ritmo cambiante de los cuatro elementos. Ser diosas, quimeras y alimento de nuestra imaginación.
