Barbara Davis Gallery is pleased to announce Marfa Lights, a solo exhibition by artist Miguel Soler-Roig. This is his fourth exhibition at the gallery, marked by his participation in this year's Venice Biennale.

In Marfa, Miguel Soler-Roig is inspired by a powerful natural atmosphere that is imbued with history and cultural references. The environment guides his photographs, methods, and his emotional state. The images show us the silence, the coldness and desolation of the city when it is deprived of artistic activity. The radiant light of the desert hits the empty streets, the austere buildings and the varied angles of concrete sculptures completely integrated into the landscape. All sense of spatial limit is lost, like the Texan horizon. As he describes in his own words:

 

I started my journey westward, with no time or distance to limit me: only the road ahead. In front of me there was an endless straight line leading to the sun. I felt that I was chasing it, accompanying into the twilight. In reality, it manifested itself as my only destination. Image after image, mile after mile. The great star set the pace.

I have always been struck by the peculiarity of the American landscape for its incomparable vastness, free of shadows and interruptions. This has to do with the sun, with its possibility of expansion, of flooding everything thanks to a liberated luminosity. This phenomenon can be observed in very few places around the globe; in Spain, where the plains dominate in some parts of Castile, in Siberia, the Gobi Desert in China or certain parts of Australia.

Through this landscape I felt, I let myself go. I let go of the reins of my gaze until I reached a meditative stage – everything was calm, like an imperturbable horizon. The path was defined by gradually approaching the West, with its

corresponding consequences, both material and symbolic.

Barbara Davis Gallery se complace en anunciar Marfa Lights, una exposición individual del artista Miguel Soler-Roig. Esta es su cuarta exposición en la galería, marcada por su participación en la Bienal de Venecia de este año.

​

En Marfa, Soler-Roig se inspira en una poderosa atmósfera natural cargada de historia y referencias. El entorno influye en sus fotografías, métodos y estado emocional. Las imágenes nos muestran el silencio, la frialdad y la desolación de la ciudad cuando se ve privada de actividad artística. La luz radiante del desierto golpea las calles vacías, los edificios austeros y los variados ángulos de las esculturas de hormigón completamente integradas en el paisaje. Se pierde todo sentido del límite espacial, como ocurre con el horizonte tejano. Como él propio artista describe:

Comencé mi viaje hacia el oeste, sin tiempo ni distancia que me limitaran: sólo el camino por delante. Frente a mí había una línea recta interminable que llevaba al sol. La sensación era que lo perseguía, acompañando al crepúsculo. En realidad, se manifestaba como mi único destino. Imagen tras imagen, kilómetro tras kilómetro, la gran estrella marcaba el ritmo.

Siempre me ha llamado la atención la peculiaridad del paisaje americano por su incomparable inmensidad, libre de sombras e interrupciones. De nuevo, tiene que ver con el sol, con su posibilidad de expansión, de inundarlo todo gracias a una luminosidad emancipada. Este fenómeno se puede observar en muy pocos lugares del planeta; en España, en algunas partes de Castilla donde predominan las llanuras; en Siberia, el desierto de Gobi en China o ciertas partes de Australia.

A través de este paisaje sentí, me dejé llevar, solté las riendas de mi mirada hasta llegar a un estadio meditativo en el que todo estaba en calma, como un horizonte imperturbable. El camino se definió acercándose poco a poco al oeste, con sus correspondientes consecuencias, tanto materiales como simbólicas.
